Abstract

Decomposition of N2O has been carried out on ternary oxides containing copper in different valence states, viz. La1.85Sr0.15CuCO4−y, La2CuO4 and CuAlO2. The reaction was conducted at two different pressures of N2O namely, 50 and 200 torr in the temperature range 613–753 K. The catalysts were characterised by XRD, IR and XPS. The variation in activity of these compounds was correlated to the solid state properties. The high activity of La1.85Sr0.5 CuO4−y is attributed to the presence of copper in mixed valence state and anion vacancies.
