Abstract
The charge transfer from support to the metal in the SMSI state and the observations of chemical shifts of core levels of metals in the SMSI state are rationalised in terms of a cluster model consisting of surface species for the reduced support and metal. The applicability of this model for TiO2 metal system is considered.
