AbstractA variety of chemical agents are employed for activating carbon materials with respect to altering the surface area as well as the morphologies of the active carbon obtained. This communication deals with the role of activating agents like carbonate and oxalate for the carbon obtained from a plant source, Calotropis gigantea. It has been shown that porous texture and the morphology of the carbon materials obtained depends on the nature of activating agents, activation with oxalate yielding tubular morphology while carbonate activation yielding plate like morphology. The possibility of obtaining different morphologies of carbon by changing the nature of activating agent is out lined
